Embedding sustainability into our culture

At Martin Tolhurst Solicitors, we believe our responsibility goes beyond providing exceptional legal services. In 2025, we strengthened this commitment by embedding our mission “to deliver exceptional legal services while creating a positive impact on our people, our community and the planet” into our business plan and core values.

Our Environmental Policy ensures sustainability is central to every decision we make, from choosing suppliers and IT equipment to travel, client care, and office operations. A dedicated Corporate Sustainability Committee, supported by our staff-led Green Team, ensures that both strategic planning and grassroots ideas are driving meaningful change.

Over the past four years, we have implemented wide-ranging initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint and increase community engagement.

Highlights include:

Solar power
At our Sittingbourne office, 94% of our energy is now solar-powered, supported by storage batteries and grid contributions. Plans are underway to expand this initiative across more offices.

Carbon footprint measurement
In partnership with Positive Planet, we are undertaking detailed carbon data collection to set measurable reduction targets for the future.

Staff-led Green Team
Colleagues across the firm generate ideas, lead volunteering initiatives, and ensure sustainability is a shared effort.

Community partnerships
From supporting Kent Wildlife Trust to volunteering on biodiversity projects, our people are directly contributing to local environmental causes.

Day-to-day impact
We’ve embraced paper light working, sustainable suppliers, energy-efficient office upgrades, digital tools, and greener commuting initiatives to make sustainability part of everyday operations.
