Jessica Bonfield

Trainee Solicitor

Jessica is currently based at our Gillingham branch, working within our Dispute Resolution Department.

What Jessica says:

I joined Martin Tolhurst in February 2023 as a Legal Secretary in the Residential Conveyancing Department, supporting our fantastic Partner Tom Bexhell with sale and purchase matters. I began my training contract with the firm in December 2023.

During that time, I discovered how much I enjoy the fast-paced nature of conveyancing. Buying or selling a home can be one of the most stressful experiences for clients, and I take pride in making the process smoother by clearly explaining each step and demystifying legal jargon.

I spent 15 months as a fee earner in our residential conveyancing department.

I am now in my second and final seat in our Gillingham branch, where I am now part of the Dispute Resolution Team. It has been a great opportunity to broaden my knowledge and experience a different area of law - particularly learning how to manage complex, often sensitive matters and support clients through challenging circumstances. I immediately fell in love with the variety of work in the Dispute Resolution department.

I achieved an LLB Law Degree with a Russell Group University (The University of Southampton) and went on to complete the LPC LLM with The University of Law.

I am due to qualify in December 2025.

In my own time I am a voracious reader and active gymgoer.

If I were not a trainee solicitor I would be…

I would probably have taken the completely different route of becoming a neurosurgeon. I undertook a year of BSC Psychology at university before deciding to become a lawyer and I absolutely loved studying behavioural neuroscience and biopsychology.

If I were stranded on a desert island and could take three pieces of music or books with me, they would be…

An incredibly tough question… Music wise I would take any of The 1975’s albums. Books I would have to go with anything by Margaret Atwood, F. Scott Fitzgerald and perhaps a good thriller by Harriet Tyce or BP Walter.
