Celebrating International Womens Day!
After a record number of women winning at the Oscars (15) beating last years 12, the ‘balance for better’ campaign for this years International women’s day theme couldn’t be more momentous!
As it states on the IWD website, balance is not a women's issue, it's a business issue. The race is on for the gender-balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth and gender-balanced sports coverage.
As a law firm, 2019 is the centenary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919–historic legislation that first enabled women to qualify and practice law as solicitors. Real progress has been made and now 50.1% of practising solicitors are women. Despite this progress further action is needed with only 28% of women compromising Partners of law firms. On average the number of women in senior management in law firms in the UK was 25%.
On the 1st April 2019 Nameeta Gujral will take up partnership at Martin Tolhurst Solicitors bringing our number of women partners in the firm to 3, and ensuring women make up 33% of our Limited Liability Partnership (LLP).
47% of our Senior Management (our LLP board and senior managers) are women. And 86% of our staff are female. (this figure does not include Partners or SMgrs)
We are already thinking about the next generation of women lawyers. In the last 4 years we have taken on 9 trainees and helped them qualify as solicitors. Of these trainees 78% have been women. To assist everyone within our work place we approved 15 flexible working requests last year number to help staff achieve a work/home balance.
With all this in mind gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Collective action and shared responsibility for driving a gender-balanced world is key. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women - while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance. Over the coming month we will look at some of the female individuals in our firm so you can get to know them better and celebrate the women that so importantly make up our business.
